I mostly made pictures around Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong in the 1980s and 90s, between assignments out of town, because Kai Tak itself was so strange and mesmerizing. Over the post-war decades the city grew up around the airport, resulting in one of the world’s most spectacular approaches: low over densely-populated Kowloon and then a hard right turn descending through 500 feet to line up with the runway sticking out into Kowloon Bay. For a lot of people living in HK, especially those who traveled the region for work, much of life was shaped by Cathay’s schedule, its base at Kai Tak and its cabin crews. Dating, co-habitation, and often marriage ensued.
